Description

1840-O Half Eagle, AU58
Challenging in High Grade

1840-O $5 Narrow Mill AU58 NGC. Variety 3. This early New Orleans issue was a workhorse in Southern commerce, and Mint State survivors are rare. This nearly Uncirculated example retains substantial luster in the peripheral regions and displays medium yellow-gold patina overall. A little softness on the central hair curls and the upper-left corner of the shield is evidence of brief circulation, and this piece is actually fairly well struck for the issue. Census: 28 in 58, 17 finer (1/18).(Registry values: P6)

Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 25SK, PCGS# 8200, Greysheet# 8960)

Weight: 8.36 grams

Metal: 90% Gold, 10% Copper
