1840-O Variety 3 Half Eagle, MS61
Narrow Mill

1840-O $5 Narrow Mill MS61 NGC. Variety 3. The New Orleans Mint began coinage production in 1838, but the 40,120 half eagles struck there in 1840 were the first of that denomination minted in Louisiana. Two major varieties are known as the Broad Mill and Narrow Mill. This example is the smaller diameter Narrow Mill, although the difference is less than 1 mm. An impressive Mint State piece, and one of only 26 such pieces certified at NGC and PCGS combined. In all grades, the two services have seen 250 examples of this issue, with an average grade of just 48. This Mint State piece has exceptional eye appeal with myriad but trivial marks and excellent design definition. Census: 9 in 61, 7 finer (3/14).(Registry values: P6)
