Description

1840-O Half Eagle, Sharp MS61
Rarely Seen in Mint State

1840-O $5 Narrow Mill MS61 PCGS. Variety 3. Although silver coinage had begun in New Orleans in 1838, half eagles were not struck until January 1840. The Southern branch mint produced 40,120 pieces with this date, of which only 150 to 175 are thought to still exist. Half eagles circulated in the South during this period, and most survivors of the 1840-O five are in the VF to XF grade range. Doug Winter estimates only "seven to nine Uncirculated pieces" are known, although the certified population figures would suggest that there are a few more. Nonetheless, Mint State 1840-O half eagles are major rarities regardless of numeric level. This MS61 coin is sharp, as expected for the Narrow Mill variety, showing satiny orange-gold luster and pleasing eye appeal for the grade. Scattered surface chatter limits the grade. Population: 3 in 61, 5 finer (6/16).(Registry values: P6)
