Description

Select 1841-D Half Eagle
Rarely Seen So Fine

1841-D $5 Small D MS63 NGC. CAC. Variety 5-D. The 1841-D Liberty half eagle has a surviving population of 150-175 specimens in all grades, from an original mintage of 29,392 pieces. Doug Winter estimates only 8-10 examples are extant in Mint State. These numbers are quite small in an absolute sense, but the 1841-D is actually one of the more available issues in the series, as the supply of many other dates is even smaller.
The present coin is a very rare Select example, with semiprooflike greenish-gold surfaces. The design elements are strongly impressed in most areas, with just a touch of softness on the arrow feathers. The fields show only minor contact marks, but there is an interesting lint mark near star 11 that can serve as a pedigree marker. Census: 4 in 63, 3 finer (4/11).(Registry values: P3)

Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 25SR, PCGS# 8204, Greysheet# 8962)

Weight: 8.36 grams
