1841-D $5 Small D XF45 NGC. Variety 5-D. Although the 1841-D mintage is less than 30,000 pieces, four die marriages exist; two with a Tall D mintmark and two with a Small D mintmark. The Small D varieties are distinguished by the second vertical shield stripe, which is incomplete on Variety 5-D and intact on Variety 6-KK. This moderately marked wheat-gold example displays mildly bright fields and myriad glimpses of luster.(Registry values: P3)
