Description

1841-D Five Dollar, AU58
Variety 5-B, Tall D

1841-D $5 Tall D AU58 NGC. Variety 5-B. While not indicated on the NGC insert, this is the Tall D variety, that Douglas Winter, in his Dahlonega Mint gold coins reference, says" "This is a rare and important variety which deserves to sell for a significant premium over variety 5-D (the Small Mintmark)." PCGS reports having graded nine "Medium" (Tall) D mintmark pieces, only one of which is finer than this NGC-graded piece. This AU58 example retains ample luster on peach-gold surfaces that are minimally abraded. Sharply struck throughout.(Registry values: P4)
