Description

1842 Small Letters Half Eagle, MS62
Only One Finer at NGC

1842 $5 Small Letters MS62 NGC. The 1842 five dollar gold mintage was 27,578 and consisted of two main varieties, Small Letters and Large Letters reverses. Both varieties are scarce, especially so in Mint State grades, though the Large Letters variety is the scarcer of the two. NGC has graded only five Small Letters examples in Mint State, two in MS61, two in MS62, and one in MS66 (11/13).

This MS62 example displays attractive yellow-gold surfaces with hints of green. There is considerable luster remaining. Though scattered marks are present, as expected at this grade level, none are worthy of mention on this lovely example.
