Description

Scarce 1842-C Large Date Five, AU55

1842-C $5 Large Date AU55 PCGS. Variety 5-C. Fully struck and similar in sharpness to the 1841-C described above. This piece is unusual as it lacks the pronounced weakness on the eagle's neck feathers that is seen on a number of 1842-C Large Date half eagles. The obverse fields are somewhat abraded and there is a reeding mark on Liberty's cheek; the reverse is very clean and quite choice. The luster is virtually full with just the slightest amount of friction in the obverse fields. There is no real wear on the high spots and this piece certainly has the appearance of a coin graded at least AU58--if not finer--by today's standards. The luster has a frosty texture and this is a characteristic seen on the few surviving examples of this issue that have not been processed. The color is a nice light yellow-gold hue that is similar to the 1841-C in this collection but a bit brighter. Housed in an old PCGS holder and conservatively graded by today's standards.
The 1842-C Large Date is actually one of the scarcer half eagles from Charlotte despite the fact that most pricing guides give it little premium in XF and even AU grades. It is slightly more available in Uncirculated than previously believed and this is probably due to the existence of a small hoard. However, properly graded Uncirculated examples are still quite rare with fewer than a dozen known. The finest remains the superb Eliasberg coin that has been graded MS65 by NGC.
