Description

Mint State 1842-C Large Date Half Eagle
Far More Boldly Struck Than Normal

1842-C $5 Large Date MS61 PCGS. CAC. Variety 1. Die State I. No crumbling appears at ST on the reverse, which characterize the Die State II coins. Both the 1842 Philadelphia and 1842 Charlotte half eagle issues had mintages of around 27,000 circulation strikes, with Dahlonega making a large production of nearly 60,000 pieces and New Orleans the smallest, at 16,400 coins. Several varieties appear among the half eagle issues of the year, due to variations in the size of the lettering on reverse and/or the date on the obverse. The 1842-C Large Date half eagle is seen more frequently than the 1842-C Small Date, but it is scarce in its own right. The finest known is the former Eliasberg Collection example, certified MS65 by NGC. Doug Winter estimates that seven to nine examples survive in Mint State, so the present MS61 PCGS example likely lies only slightly outside of the Condition Census. Full mint luster is present on surfaces that range from honey-gold at the rims to yellow-gold in the centers. Extensive scattered small yet minor marks, more prominent on the obverse, determine the grade. The strike, however, is far bolder than normal, and adds to the already significant eye appeal. Population: 1 in 61, 5 finer (11/12).(Registry values: P5)
