Description

1842-C Large Date Half Eagle, MS62
Uncommonly Well-Preserved
Conditionally Rare

1842-C $5 Large Date MS62 NGC. Variety 1. Although not as scarce as the Small Date variety, the Large Date 1842-C is rare in its own right in any Uncirculated grade. A larger date format was introduced in 1842 across several denominations, replacing the date logotypes from 1841, which were smaller numerals. In theory, the 1842 Small Date variant was struck first, followed by its Large Date counterpart.

This is a medium green-gold example, with attractive frosted luster throughout lightly abraded fields. The strike is above-average for the issue, with only nominal weakness at the eagle's head and neck. Traces of reflectivity surround the central devices. NGC and PCGS show a combined total of eight numerically finer pieces, a number that may be inflated by resubmissions. Mint State branch mint gold from the 1840s always represents an important opportunity for gold specialists. Census: 2 in 62, 5 finer (10/19).(Registry values: P5)
