Description

1842-C Half Eagle, MS63
Popular Large Date Variety

1842-C $5 Large Date MS63 NGC. Variety 1. The 1842-C Large Date half eagle is more available than its Small Date counterpart, but it is still a scarce issue, underappreciated by non-specialists. Probably no more than 110-140 examples survive in all grades today. Mint State coins are elusive and specimens in Select Mint State condition are very rare.

The present coin features a date that fills much more of the exergue than that on the rarer Small Date variety. Luster swirls softly on the obverse, more strongly on the reverse, with a few shiny spots surrounding Liberty's portrait that imply a frosty character where this texture is not disturbed. Definition is strong on the hair over Liberty's ear and the eagle's leg feathers, not always a guarantee. Mint State examples of this issue are offered only occasionally, Select and better coins generally come on the market less than once per year. For the Large Date variety, Census: 2 in 62, 3 finer (8/13).(Registry values: P5)
