Description

Large Date 1842-C Half Eagle, MS64
    One of the Finest Known

1842-C $5 Large Date MS64 NGC. Variety 1. There are a number of visually impressive Charlotte half eagles in the Cherokee County Collection and this example, one of the finest known of the variety, clearly ranks as one of the finest in the collection. It is bright and extremely lustrous with the quality of strike one would expect to see on a Philadelphia coin of this era. There are a few light marks strewn about the fields, but this is a coin with real eye appeal and a piece that would work well as either a centerpiece of a date set of Charlotte half eagles or a single high-grade type coin.
The 1842-C Large Date is an extremely underrated issue that is actually one of the rarest Charlotte half eagles in terms of overall rarity. It is a bit more available in high grades and there are as many as seven to nine pieces in Uncirculated, including at least three very high-grade examples. The finest is the wonderful Milas/Eliasberg Gem, graded by NGC. The present example is tied with one other (Ex: 2004 ANA, Heritage, lot 352, where it sold for $35,650) and these are the only two coins for the date that have been graded MS64 by a major third-party service.
Ex: Pre-Long Beach Rarities Sale (Bowers and Merena, 2/2007), lot 716, where it sold for $33,350); Milwaukee Rarities Sale (Bowers and Merena, 8/2007), lot 1800, where it brought $35,650.

The way you grouped lots, photographed, and presented the material was too notch. I was impressed that you took the time to attribute coins to the Krause reference as their "plate coin" and that many of your descriptions included pertinent facts and infor
