1842-C Small Date Half Eagle, AU58
The NGC Coin Explorer Plate Coin
A Rare Issue in High Grade

1842-C $5 Small Date AU58 NGC. Variety 1. "The 1842-C Small Date is the rarest half eagle from this mint and the rarest collectible coin from Charlotte," -- Thus Doug Winter writes of this issue in Gold Coins of the Charlotte Mint, third edition. The Southern gold specialist goes on to estimate that only 60 to 80 pieces are known in all grades, with high-end AU coins being extremely rare. Winter's survival estimate is likely accurate; even though PCGS suggests that as many as 100 pieces may exist, the certified population of PCGS and NGC combined is only 74 coins, including likely resubmissions (10/17).

This near-Mint example is in the late die state, showing a heavy rim cud at 12 o'clock on the obverse. The satiny surfaces show light field chatter but no obvious wear. Other than the eagle's neck, both devices are sharply struck. Rich orange-gold overtones accent yellow-gold surfaces, and eye appeal is excellent. Census: 8 in 58 (1 in 58+), 5 finer (10/17).(Registry values: P8)
