Description

1842-C Small Date Half Eagle, Rare AU58
Only Two Finer at PCGS

1842-C $5 Small Date AU58 PCGS. Variety 1. Not only is the 1842-C Small Date the rarest C-mint half eagle, it is also one of the rarest issues produced by the Charlotte Mint overall, exceeded in rarity only by the 1849-C Open Wreath gold dollar. The mintage for the 1842 issue, consisting of both the Small Date (believed to have been struck first, as the logotype is the same size as the previous Charlotte half eagle issue) and Large Date varieties, was just 27,432 coins, and it is estimated only 60 to 80 Small Date survivors are known. Only 47 examples have been certified by PCGS in all grades, while NGC reports just 24 pieces. Of these, only 13 have been awarded the AU58 grade level, while just seven have been deemed worthy of a higher grade (6/14).

This near-Gem example exhibits an essentially sharp strike overall, though both sides reveal areas of typical softness around the border dentils. The surfaces display prevailing yellow-gold patina, contrasting against areas of deeper yellow and hints of pale green and orange. As expected at this grade level, scattered abrasions appear, none worthy of individual mention. Tiny flakes of dark residue appear at parts of the upper reverse rim.(Registry values: P8)
