1842-C Small Date Five, VF Details
Rarest Charlotte Half Eagle

1842-C $5 Small Date--Harshly Cleaned--NGC. VF Details. Variety 1, the only dies known for this issue. The 1842-C Small Date half eagle is the rarest five dollar gold coin from the Charlotte Mint. The original mintage was a paltry 4,595 pieces, and the surviving population in all grades consists of only 60-80 examples. Among all C-mint gold coins, only the legendary 1849-C Open Wreath gold dollar is considered rarer than the present issue. Much original detail remains on this specimen, and while telltale traces of cleaning are evident on the surfaces, abrasions are relatively minor for this issue.
