Description

1842-C Liberty Half Eagle, VF30
Rare Small Date Variety

1842-C $5 Small Date VF30 PCGS. CAC. Variety 1. This is the rarest Charlotte Mint half eagle with an estimated 60-80 pieces known in all grades. Examples are typically seen in lower grades with various problems that prevent numeric assessments. This coin saw extensive circulation but is problem-free and certainly attractive for the grade -- attractive enough, in fact, to gain approval from CAC. Somewhat mushy detail reflects both wear and a strike that is soft at the borders, especially on the obverse. Rich yellow-gold centers contrast with splashes of reddish-gold towards the rims. None of the numerous abrasions are especially deep or detracting. This is a pleasing example of the rarest collectible Charlotte five dollar gold issue and a great option for the ambitious specialists without the significant budget required to purchase one of the few high-grade survivors. Population: 7 in 30, 36 finer. CAC: 2 in 30, 10 finer (10/17).(Registry values: P8)

Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 25SV, PCGS# 8208, Greysheet# 8965)

Weight: 8.36 grams

Metal: 90% Gold, 10% Copper
