Description

1842-D Small Date Five, AU58
Lustrous Yet Abraded

1842-D $5 Small Date AU58 NGC. Variety 8-E. The Small Date 1842 Dahlonega half eagle shows the date perceptibly further away from the bust truncation than the Large Date, although the die scratches at IB of LIBERTY also confirm attribution. This piece still shows most of the luster remaining over yellow-gold surfaces, but the surfaces are challenged by a light but extensive peppering of small marks throughout both sides. Census: 23 in 58, 7 finer (3/13).(Registry values: P3)

Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 25SX, PCGS# 8210, Greysheet# 8967)

Weight: 8.36 grams

Metal: 90% Gold, 10% Copper
