Description

1842-O Five Dollar, AU50
Elusive New Orleans Issue

1842-O $5 AU50 NGC. Variety 1. The 1842-O is among the rarest half eagles from this mint. Fewer than 100 pieces are known, and Mint State coins are prohibitively rare. This About Uncirculated representative displays original yellow-gold surfaces with coppery overtones in the fields. The eagle's neck, talons, and the fletchings show minor strike weakness amid a scattering of minor abrasions. Census: 5 in 50, 17 finer (7/16).
