Description

Pleasing 1842-O Half Eagle, VF30

1842-O $5 VF30 NGC. A moderately circulated, yet attractive representative of this challenging earlier New Orleans issue, which appears infrequently on the market; Garrett and Guth (2006) draw a comparison to the 1842-D Large Date, Large Letters variant, noting that the latter sells at auction with significantly greater frequency. The still-luminous orange-gold surfaces show a measure of the central softness that characterizes most examples, though the fields and devices are free of significant distractions.(Registry values: P7)
