Description

Sharp Mint State 1843 Half Eagle

1843 $5 MS61 NGC. This is an available P-mint issue from the 1840s, but as this example proves it is also a well-produced one, with a bold strike and appealing surfaces. A few dozen Mint State coins are known. This piece has good luster, with some light smoky gray-gold haze in the fields. There are few mentionable distractions, save for a couple of tiny dotlike indentations beneath the eagle's beak. Census: 22 in 61, 33 finer (8/08).(Registry values: P5)
