Description

Pleasing, Highly Lustrous MS64 1843 Five Dollar

1843 $5 MS64 NGC. CAC. As a date, the 1843 half eagle is the second most common issue of the 1840s. David Akers states that it is only moderately rare in the lower Uncirculated grades. However, at the MS64 level, the coin is very elusive. In The Official Red Book of Auction Records 1994-2003, Jeff Garrett and John Dannreuther were able to find only four offerings of MS64 coins during that ten-year period. A few more coins may have surfaced since then but the issue remains very challenging at this level. Harry Bass settled for an MS61 and the John J. Pittman coin was called Uncirculated, nearly Choice.
The present coin would be a great addition to a type set or a date-mintmark collection of No Motto Liberty half eagles. The striking details are razor-sharp on both sides. The color is a pleasing, misty, orange-gold with red patina on the reverse. There are virtually no abrasions visible to the naked eye. Census: 10 in 64, 1 finer (7/08).(Registry values: P5)
