Description
1843-C Half Eagle, XF40
Broad Mill Size, Attractive Collector Coin
1843-C $5 XF40 NGC. Winter-2. Ex: Rive d'Or Collection. The
Charlotte Mint 1843 half eagles are better produced than those from
surrounding years, with stronger strikes and continued use of the
Small Letters reverse. The other mints transitioned to the Large
Letters reverse, except for some 1843 New Orleans half eagles.
Perhaps more interesting is the diameter of 1843-C half eagles,
some of which apparently used the wrong collar from 1839-1840
measuring 22.5 mm. The standard half eagle size was 21.6 mm
implemented in later 1840. This Broad Mill XF40 example displays
pleasing olive-gold surfaces peppered by a few tiny marks and minor
abrasions. The wide rims are distinctive and essentially unmarked.Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 25T3, PCGS# 8214, Greysheet# 8970)
