Description

1843-D Medium D Half Eagle, VF30
Well-Struck With Attractive Color

1843-D $5 Medium D VF30 NGC. Winter 10-G. Ex: Rive d'Or Collection. Doug Winter notes the 1843-D is the most available Dahlonega half eagle from the 1840s. Two varieties exist -- the available Medium D mintmark dies, and the very scarce Small D mintmark variety. Even the Medium D coins are scarce at the AU55 level or finer, placing this VF30 example squarely at the midpoint of availability for most collectors. More important is the lack of serious marks or abrasions on this well-circulated coin. A loupe reveals only tiny marks that dot the surfaces and the bold rims are free of any mentionable nicks or disturbances. Medium olive-gold surfaces provide substantial original eye appeal.
