Description

Important and Highly Desirable 1843-D
Small D Half Eagle, MS62

1843-D $5 Small D MS62 PCGS. Variety 10-G. The rare Small D variety, which is significantly more elusive than its Medium D counterpart. The surfaces of this immensely appealing example offer vibrant luster, semiprooflike in the centers with frosty margins. The color on the piece is attractive and displays peripheral orange patina that frames the rich yellow-gold interiors. Lightly abraded in the fields but with a clean appearance overall, this coin is impressive for the grade.
This outstanding Small D piece is undoubtedly among the finest known and is the sole MS62 example of this variant graded by PCGS, with none finer (8/08). In fact, PCGS has graded only two Uncirculated specimens. NGC does not distinguish the Medium D and Small D variants, so one of the five Select pieces or the lone Choice coin at that service could possibly be a Small D as well. Regardless, this gorgeous coin is an important example that belongs in a collection of the finest Dahlonega gold.(Registry values: P3)
