Description

Interesting Late-State
1843-O Large Letters Five, MS60

1843-O $5 Large Letters MS60 NGC. This is a spectacular grade for this well-known O-mint rarity, one that is quite scarce in grades above XF and rare in Mint State. The finest example known was the Bass coin, which graded MS64. Both the Bass coin and the present example were in late die states. This piece shows many spidery die cracks on both sides, including one from the rim through the 1 in the date and to the bust; cracks from 11 of the 13 stars; and a crack from the 3 in the date to the bust. On the reverse, which shows the normal weak strike on the periphery, most of the bases of UNITED STATES OF AMERICA are joined by various cracks that are more advanced than those on the obverse.
Another crack joins the tops of FIVE D, the nearby period, and the rim, and IC in AMERICA are nearly obliterated on this failing die. The centers of this coin are actually remarkably well struck, and both sides show somewhat prooflike luster. If you are seeking gold coins with interesting die state characteristics and tons of character, this piece should be high on your list. (Registry values: P7)
