Description

Important Choice Large Letters
1843-O Half Eagle

1843-O $5 Large Letters MS64 NGC. CAC. Variety 1. An uncommonly lustrous sun-gold near-Gem with traces of olive and peach toning. A good strike for a New Orleans No Motto issue, although the curls and the eagle's neck show incomplete detail. A wispy die crack connects the obverse border to the base of the portrait through the 1 of the date. The most obvious distraction is actually a Mint-caused anomaly, faint horizontal roller marks that extend from the central devices out into the fields. A reeding mark above the eagle's head is trivial yet the most noticeable abrasion. An unusual opportunity for quality conscious Southern gold collector. Census: 5 in 64, 1 finer (9/11).
