Description

1844 Half Eagle, MS64+ CAC
Shattered Reverse Die
High Condition Census Example

1844 $5 MS64+ PCGS. CAC. The 1844 Liberty half eagle is significantly rare at the near-Gem grade level, with the piece being the only one so graded with a Plus designation, and the only coin in MS64 with CAC endorsement. PCGS lists a single finer coin, NGC none (11/24). This example benefits from bright straw-gold luster and luminous fields, with a bold strike throughout. Grade-limiting abrasions are light and mostly appear in the obverse fields. On the reverse, a network of die cracks runs throughout. A long crack bisects the die from the A in STATES to the do after AMERICA, while perpendicular cracks branch off at various points. A highly intriguing example from a late die state. Population: 6 in 64 (1 in 64+), 1 finer. CAC: 1 in 64, 0 finer (11/24).(Registry values: P5)
