Description
1844-C Half Eagle, AU55
Important Condition Rarity
1844-C $5 AU55 PCGS. Variety 1, the only variety for the
year. A substantial mintage of 23,631 half eagles was achieved at
the Charlotte Mint in 1844, but the coins circulated heavily and
attrition reduced the supply of these coins dramatically. The
surviving population is estimated at 125-175 examples, with 24-32
specimens in AU grades. High grade coins are rare. The present coin
displays the soft strike nearly always seen on this issue, with
more detail present on the reverse. The surfaces are a pleasing
green-gold, with fewer abrasions than usually seen on this date.
Population: 8 in 55, 10 finer (2/10).From The Lucy Llewellyn Collection of Southern Gold.(Registry values: P5)
