Description

Extremely Rare Mint State 1844-C Half Eagle

1844-C MS 61 NGC. Although 23,631 coins were produced of this issue, the 1844-C is a scarce Charlotte half eagle that only rarely surfaces any finer than XF. This high attrition rate has been attributed to the public's growing distrust in Christopher Bechtler's gold coins and the halt in production at the Charlotte mint caused by a fire in July of 1844. This sparkling, satin-finish, yellow-gold example, one of just four mint state pieces graded, is very well struck considering the mint of origin and suffers only from moderate scuffiness in the fields that is amplified by semi-reflective luster. A reverse die crack extends from the base of the eagle's neck, through the initial A in AMERICA, and to the border. The importance of this piece to collectors of the ever-widening market for Southern gold cannot emphasized enough. Population: 2 in 61, none finer (11/98).
