Description

1844-D Liberty Head Half Eagle, MS62
Condition Rarity

1844-D $5 MS62 PCGS. Variety 11-H. The 1844-D half eagle enjoyed a mintage of 88,982 pieces, fairly large for the series. In his series reference Doug Winter estimates a surviving population of 200-225 pieces in all grades, with perhaps seven to nine specimens extant in Mint State. Recent population data from the grading services support the Condition Rarity status of this issue in Mint State. The present coin is sharply detailed for a Dahlonega issue, with the strands of Liberty's hair clearly delineated and all star centers visible. The greenish-gold surfaces show flashes of reflectivity on the obverse, with minimal abrasions for the grade. Currently, PCGS has certified four examples in MS62, with four finer; while NGC has graded only three specimens at this level, with three finer (6/10).(Registry values: P2)
