Description
MS62 1844-O Half Eagle
1844-O $5 MS62 NGC. Variety Two. The 1844-O half eagle had the largest mintage of any O-mint half eagle, and the second-largest emission of any O-mint gold coin behind the 1847-O eagle. Most examples circulated extensively, however, and certified survivors average only XF45 or AU50. This piece shows some planchet roughness and die rust, not unusual for the issue, and stars 5 through 10 are notably weak due to the die lapping for which the issue is known (per Doug Winter). A couple of canal-shaped planchet flaws appear, one from Liberty's chin to star 2 on the obverse, a second on the reverse from between OF downward into the field above the eagle's wing. None of the reverse die cracks Winter describes are obvious, however. Census: 5 in 62, 11 finer (8/08). (Registry values: P5)Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 25TA, PCGS# 8222, GSID# 8977)
