Description
1845-O Half Eagle, MS61
Sharp S.S. New York Coin
1845-O $5 MS61 NGC. Variety 1. Ex: S.S. New York. A
rare Mint State example of this early New Orleans half eagle,
showing smooth yellow-gold surfaces and a remarkably sharp strike.
No significant abrasions are present. Only 41,000 half eagles were
struck in 1845 at the New Orleans Mint, and most were lost to
attrition. This is a conditionally rare issue in Uncirculated
grades. In Gold Coins of the New Orleans Mint, third
edition, Doug Winter writes of the 1845-O: "In fact, it is much
scarcer than many of the better-known Charlotte and Dahlonega half
eagles struck during this era." Census: 8 in 61, 6 finer
(11/18).From The Coco Collection. (Registry values: P7)
Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 25TD, PCGS# 8225, Greysheet# 8979)
Weight: 8.36 grams
Metal: 90% Gold, 10% Copper
