1845-O $5 MS61 PCGS. If these coins bore the Classic Head design rather than the Liberty Head design, it might help collectors understand how truly historic they are. Nevertheless, this issue was made only seven years after the United States opened its first branch mints, including New Orleans, and it was a time when most of the gold in the United States was still mined in Georgia and the Carolinas. The 1845-O half eagle had a production of 41,000 coins, and Mint State examples can be counted on both hands. This piece boasts bright, semiprooflike fields on each side, with lemon-yellow color complementing tinges of light reddish patina. The strike is uniformly strong, although short of full. Several small abrasions peppered over each side account for the grade, but none are noticeable without magnification. A prize for the collector of antebellum O-mint gold coins.
