High Grade 1846 Large Date Five, MS63
1846 $5 Large Date MS63 NGC. CAC. The 1846 half eagle is relatively scarce in all grades and quite rare in Mint State. The MS63 coin in the Harry Bass Collection was considered the finest known when that landmark collection crossed the auction block. Since then a few more coins have been certified at the MS64 level. The coin offered here, one of two MS63 coins in the present offering, is a realistic candidate for Condition Census. The 1846 half eagle is a delight for the student of varieties and die states. Two major varieties have been identified, Large Date and Small Date. The present coin is the more common Large Date variety. The obverse features a long die crack running from the rim near star 5, through all stars 6-11, and back to the rim. The reverse has an even more dramatic crack running from the E in STATES through the eagle, shield, lowest arrowhead, and touching the foot of the second A in AMERICA. The reverse die also shows prominent clash marks in the field.
The surfaces are semiprooflike, with beautiful reddish-gold color overall that darkens slightly around the periphery. Some light chatter is evident in the fields on both sides. The strike is extraordinary, and all details of the design are fully realized. This coin combines rarity, beauty, and special interest for the die student in one total package.(Registry values: P5)
