Description

Select 1846 Large Date Five
Condition Rarity

1846 $5 Large Date MS63 NGC. Ex: S.S. New York. Part of a substantial mintage of 395,942 pieces, the 1846 Large Date half eagle seems to be slightly more available than the Small Date variety. However, the issue is still a fairly scarce coin in all grades. At the MS63 level, the issue is very rare. The actual size difference of the date in the two varieties is hard to determine, and the best way to distinguish between the varieties is to note the spacing of the different numerals in the date. In the Large Date, there is a gap between the 1 and the 8 that can be seen easily. The outstanding feature of the present coin is its exemplary strike, with fine detail present on all devices. The surfaces are lustrous with semiprooflike fields, and they display a minimum number of handling marks for the grade. Overall visual appeal is outstanding. Census: 11 in 63, 7 finer (2/10).(Registry values: P5)
