Description

Tremendous 1846 Large Date Half Eagle, MS63

1846 $5 Large Date MS63 NGC. There are two major varieties of the 1846 half eagle, the Small Date and Large Date, although the actual difference in date size is slight. The Large Date is the more common of the two, but both varieties are scarce in Mint State. Harry Bass Jr. owned eight examples of the issue.
The easiest way to distinguish between the two variants is to examine the position of the 1 in the date against the forward truncation of the bust--although even this method requires a side-by-side comparison. The Large Date has the left top serif of the 1 more nearly aligned with the left edge of the truncation, and the entire date, of course, fills more of the space underneath the bust.
The surfaces are markedly prooflike on this splendid MS63 piece, with lustrous yellow-gold coloration and much overall eye appeal. Wispy die cracks run through stars 5 through 10, and only a few light contact marks on both sides seemingly preclude an even finer grade. The strike is bold, and generous luster washes from each side. In MS63, this coin is one of only two so certified at NGC, and there are only two pieces finer (8/08). Simply a tremendous example!(Registry values: P5)
