Description

MS64 ★ 1846 Large Date Five
Tied for Finest Certified

1846 $5 Large Date MS64 ★ NGC. Ex: S.S. New York. The 1846 half eagle is considerably more difficult to locate than its generous mintage of 395,942 pieces would indicate. The Large Date variety is more available than its Small Date counterpart, but the issue is extremely rare at the Choice level and basically unknown in any finer grade. The differences between the two varieties are subtle, and catalogers only began to systematically distinguish between them in the early 20th century. An early appearance of the Large Date variety was in lot 1102 of the Peter Mougey Collection (Thomas Elder, 9/1910), where Elder noted, "1846 Large date with medium short 6. Very fine; scarce." Today, numismatists find it easier to distinguish the variety by looking at the spacing and location of the numerals in the date, as the size difference between the dates is really quite small.
The present specimen is virtually unimprovable, with extraordinary striking details throughout. The lustrous surfaces are a lovely green-gold color, with no significant distractions. An interesting die crack bisects the reverse from 5 o'clock to 11 o'clock. Census: 2 in 64 ★ , none finer (2/10).(Registry values: P5)
