Description

1846-C Five Dollar, AU50
Few Available in Any Grade

1846-C $5 AU50 NGC. After a fire closed the Charlotte Mint in 1844, it did not reopen until October 1846 and then only produced 12,995 five dollar gold pieces. Only 100-125 examples are believed known today, with 20-24 pieces estimated in AU. The small number of survivors as a percentage of the mintage is most likely attributable to higher demand created by the mint's closure for more than a year. This is a bright yellow-gold five that is surprisingly well detailed. The only mentionable marks are both on the reverse: There is a scratch across the left (facing) leg of the eagle, and a series of skipping milling marks in the field below the eagle's right (facing) wing.(Registry values: P5)
