Satiny Near-Mint 1846-C Half Eagle

1846-C $5 AU58 PCGS. Variety 1, the only confirmed variety of the date. Made to the tune of only 12,995 coins, the 1846-C half eagle is one of the scarcest C-mint fives due to a fire at the Charlotte Mint in 1845. The few quarter eagles and half eagles made when the facility reopened circulated widely because of the pent-up demand. This near-Mint State coins offers satiny fields that exhibit a hint of reflectivity beneath rich honey-gold obverse color and lighter green-gold reverse color. Nearly full luster is broken only on the highest design points and the surfaces are lightly abraded. A few Mint State pieces are known. Population: 5 in 58, 5 finer (2/10).(Registry values: P5)
