Description

1846-C Half Eagle, MS61 CAC
Condition Census, Rare Date

1846-C $5 MS61 PCGS. CAC. Winter-1. Only one die variety is known for the 1846-C half eagle, showing repunching on the base of the 1 in the date. This issue comes from a mintage 12,995 pieces, struck during the last quarter of the calendar year. Doug Winter considers the 1846-C to be one of the scarcest half eagles from the Charlotte Mint (100 to 125 pieces known), which he suggests may be due to heightened commercial use of the issue since it was the first half eagle struck at Charlotte in over a year. The Charlotte Mint had not produced half eagles in 1845, due repairs needed after a fire. Mint State examples of this issue are rare. We have previously handled only a single MS61 coin, in our February 2009 Long Beach Signature, which realized $12,650. Population: 2 in 61, 3 finer. CAC: 2 in 61, 1 finer (11/24).(Registry values: P5)
