Scarce Series Issue--1846-C Half Eagle, XF40

1846-C $5 XF40 PCGS. Variety 1. Only 12,995 half eagles were coined at the Charlotte Mint in 1846. The issue is one of the scarcest C-Mint half eagles, with an estimated surviving population of 100 to 125 pieces in all grades. Perhaps 30 to 40 examples are extant at the XF level. The present coin shows moderate, even wear on the obverse, and somewhat less wear on the reverse. The surfaces on both sides show few abrasions. Population: 9 in 40, 40 finer (10/09).(Registry values: P5)
