Description

1846-D Five Dollar, AU58
Rare Any Finer

1846-D $5 AU58 NGC. Variety 16-I. Lemon-gold patina clings to the protected areas of this briefly circulated Dahlonega half eagle. The fields display marks but none merit singular mention. The strike is above average though the eagle's neck and fletchings show the blending usually seen from this Southern mint. The 1846-D with the Normal Mintmark is definitely underrated outside of series specialists, and one of the most challenging issues of the series in high grade. Census: 12 in 58, 4 finer (2/18).
