1846-D Half Eagle, Normal Mintmark, AU58
Overlooked Condition Rarity
1846-D $5 AU58 NGC. Variety 16-K. Part of the large mintage
of 80,294 pieces for the date, the 1846-D Normal Mintmark half
eagle is one of the most difficult issues of the series in high
grades. The total surviving population of this issue is estimated
at 110-130 pieces, with only 12-13 specimens known in AU grades.
The present coin has attractive greenish-gold surfaces, with fewer
abrasions than usually seen on an 1846-D. Census: 12 in 58, 2 finer
