Description

1846-D Normal Mintmark Half Eagle, MS61
One of the Finest Known

1846-D $5 MS61 PCGS. Variety 16-K. The special nature of this coin can best be demonstrated by quoting Doug Winter's description of the usually seen 1846-D:

"It appears that 1846-D Normal Mintmark half eagles went directly into circulation and stayed there for a long period of time. As a result, they show signs of rough handling."

This Uncirculated piece is certainly the exception to that rule. The surfaces are bright and lustrous with a glimmer of semireflectivity in the fields. The devices are well struck overall, and magnification is needed to find a couple of small marks on the face of Liberty. At the MS61 level, this is one of the finest 1846-D fives known. Two MS61s are listed at the top of Doug's Condition Census, and since the publication of his latest book (2003), only two pieces have been certified finer (6/10).(Registry values: P3)
