1846-D/D $5 AU53 NGC. Variety 17-J. The mintmark is widely repunched north. The variety is sufficiently dramatic to secure a separate listing in the Guide Book. This is the Centered Date variant; a Low Date variant (Variety 16-J) is also known. The present richly detailed example is only lightly abraded and displays attractive and delicate green-gold toning.(Registry values: P3)
