Description
1846-D/D Half Eagle, AU55
Widely Repunched Mintmark
1846-D/D $5 AU55 PCGS. CAC. Variety 16-J. The 1846-D/D half
eagle is the most dramatic die variety issued by the Dahlonega
Mint. The mintmark was initially entered much too high and at an
angle. The mintmark was added again, in the proper position. The
1846-D/D is known with two obverses, the Low Date Variety 16-J and
the High Date Variety 17-J. They are similar in rarity. The present
well-struck example exhibits minimally marked caramel-gold
surfaces. Luster dominates design elements. Population: 29 in 55,
31 finer. CAC: 5 in 55, 2 finer (8/23).(Registry values: P3)Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 25TH, PCGS# 8229, Greysheet# 8982)
