Blundered Mintmark Variety

1846-D/D $5 MS61 NGC. Variety 17-J. The mintmark was initially entered very high, overlapping the branch. It was repunched in a proper position, but much of the initial mintmark is visible. This sun-gold Dahlonega half eagle is refreshingly unabraded and exhibits a bold strike. Luster dominates the motifs and margins. Census: 4 in 61, 3 finer (5/14).(Registry values: P3)
