Description

Impressive 1846-D/D Half Eagle, MS62

1846-D/D $5 MS62 NGC. Variety 16-L. In 1846 the Dahlonega Mint produced several different varieties including this prominent and popular doubled mintmark variety. In the second edition of Gold Coins of the Dahlonega Mint 1838-1861, Doug Winter describes three obverse dies and three reverse dies.
The three obverse dies are quite similar in appearance, and rather easily confused. Obverse 14 has the 1 closer to the bust, obverse 15 has the 1 centered between the bust and border, and obverse 16 has the 1 slightly closer to the border. The reverse dies include Reverse I that was carried over from 1845 with the upright of the D nearly over the center of the V below, Reverse J with the mintmark high, nearly touching the stem and point of the arrowfeather, Reverse K with the mintmark nearly centered between the stem, arrowfeather, and E, and Reverse L, actually an early die state of Reverse J with the mintmark boldly doubled.
This frosty green-gold specimen is about sixth or seventh finest for the D over D variety, and is similarly ranked when all 1846-D half eagles of any die variety are considered. Several of the scattered abrasions may remain from the original planchet. It is a bold strike with essentially full details, and possesses excellent eye appeal. Census: 1 in 62, 3 finer (8/08).(Registry values: P3)
