Description

Superior, Condition Census 1846-D/D

1846-D/D MS 62 PCGS. A superb coin with very sharp overall detail and full, frosty luster beneath exquisite orange-gold and yellow-gold color. There are a few minor marks in the left obverse field; the reverse is very nearly of gem quality. From the standpoint of quality and appearance, this is one of the finest half eagles in the North Georgia Collection.
This eye-catching variety is the result of the original mintmark having been punched too high. It is clear to the naked eye and has long been accepted as a readily collectible variety within the series. It is a bit less rare than the Normal Mintmark variety of this year in terms of overall rarity but it is far more available in higher grade. As many as 10 examples are known in Mint State including a few really choice ones. The finest is the PCGS graded MS 65 now in the Duke's Creek Collection and earlier offered by us in our 1996 ANA sale as lot 8312; the Milas: 464 coin has been graded MS 64 by NGC. The North Georgia Collection specimen is tied with two others as the third finest known. One is in the Farmer Collection and it was earlier owned by Arthur Montgomery; the other is in a Michigan collection and it was lot 441 in the Eliasberg Collection sale. After this trio of nice PCGS graded MS 62 coins, the quality of the other 1846-D/D half eagles in Mint State drops appreciably.
