Description

1847 Half Eagle, Boldly Struck MS64+
Only Two Finer at NGC

1847 $5 MS64+ NGC. CAC. The 1847 five dollar piece saw a substantial production approaching 1 million circulation strikes, making it the most common date of the 1840s. Circulated specimens are found with relative ease, and even Mint State examples can be located through MS63 with patience and searching. Near-Gem and finer coins are rare, however. We theorize that the 19 pieces in MS64 seen by NGC may well be inflated by resubmissions.

Bright luster exudes from the apricot-gold surfaces of this high-end near-Gem, and a solid strike imparts bold detail to all of the design elements. Just a few minute marks prevent Gem classification. A small milling mark to the lower right of star 5 is mentioned solely for pedigree purposes. This piece yields great eye appeal, aptly recognized by CAC. Census: 2 in 64+, 1 in 64+ , 1 finer (12/13).(Registry values: P5)
